The airport was officially opened on 27 March 1914. The main field before the opening of Don Mueang International Airport was the Sa Pathum airfield. Don Mueang was important for Asia and the hub of Thai Airways International prior to Suvarnabhumi. At its peak in 2005 it served 80 airlines operating 160,000 flights and handling over 38,000,000 passengers and 700,000 tons of cargo. It was the 18th busiest airport in the world and 2nd in Asia by passenger volume.
On 28 September 2006 the airport was replaced by Suvarnabhumi Airport. Don Mueang became a facility for charter and non-connecting domestic commercial flights and military aviation. Three airlines are now using the airport, which includes Thai Airways, Nok Air, and One 2 Go airlines. The airport is now in operation along with Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Vibhavadi Rangsit Road is the main route linking the airport with downtown Bangkok. The Uttaraphimuk Elevated Tollway, running above Vibhavadi Rangsit, offers a more rapid option for getting into the city and connects to Bangkok's inner city expressway network. Besides travelling by road, there is train service connecting to Hua Lamphong station in the center of town. |

Taximeter is our recommended way to get into the city is simply via a taxi. They're quick and air-conditioned, take you directly where you want to go and are among the cheapest per mile in Asia. You must insist that they turn on their meter before you get in. They charge a minimum of 35 baht for the first 3 kilometres, and approximately 5 baht per kilometre thereafter. Make sure you have change, as taxi drivers often don’t!
NOTE: Tell the driver to take the tollway. It's far less crowded and it's safer. It will cost you 50-60 baht extra for the tolls, but it's well worth it.
Incoming passengers at Departures (level 4).
Outgoing passengers at the Transport Center taxi stand (Level 1)
Public taxis serving the airport must be less than 5 years old.
Public taxi must be certified by Airports of Thailand. |
