Tourist Routes and VIP Excursions of Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is the city of beauty, warm hospitality and good manners; a city of religion & ancient Buddhist temples and the centre of Thai arts and handicrafts. Over 700 years culture is rooted so deeply that it has its own dialect, architecture, costumes, dances and even its own cuisine. Though modernization crept into this faraway region, Chiang Mai retains its natural charm & old culture.
History is a boon to tourists who can marvel at the archeological and historical artifacts that burst out of the countryside. Whether you want it or not, you will have to immerse yourself in history, but also in a smoking hot nightlife, as Chiang Mai has a bit of everything. In day time you will want to take a walking tour to some of the more than 300 Buddhist temples, all of which are at least 500 years old. The most interesting ruins in the region are called Wiang Kum Kham; they are from a lively city, which washed out in a flood 700 years ago.
Don't forget the elephant show and see how an elephant will paint, play soccer and basketball, or take an elephant-ride into the jungle. White water rafting is another popular activity, as is rock climbing. Chiang Mai is also known for its amazing golf courses and well-tended tennis courts.
If you are into shopping, Chiang Mai has one of the most exciting night-time bazaars of Thailand, where you can get great deals on silk and traditional hand made crafts. If you don’t feel like hiking or walking, you can enjoy a boat trip up and down the Ping River.
The city is also known for gourmet meals at affordable prices, with dozens of restaurants in the city, almost all of them are world class.
Chiang Mai is a gay friendly town if you know where to look for it!
This guide gives an idea where to start looking for your adventures. If you have a chance to visit this tourist paradise, you will understand why people call it "The Rose of the North". We just can’t wait for you to come visit - we know you will have as good a time as we do!

Wat Phratat Doi Suthep

Temple built by King Gue-Na in 1383 A.D. has a large golden pagoda in the center which contains part of the holy relics of Lord Buddha.
According to legend, a monk named Sumanathera had a dream; God told him to go to Pang Cha and look for a relic, claimed to be Buddha's shoulder bone. The relic displayed magical powers; it glowed, was able to vanish, could move itself and replicate itself. He took the relic to King Dharmmaraja who ruled the Sukhothai. The king made offerings and hosted a ceremony when Sumanathera arrived, however the relic displayed no abnormal characteristics. The king told Sumanathera to keep it. King Nu Naone of the Lanna Kingdom heard of the relic and offered the monk to take it to him instead. In 1368 with King Dharmmaraja's permission, Sumanathera took the relic to what is now Lamphun. The relic apparently split in two, one piece the same size, the other smaller than the original. The smaller piece was enshrined at a temple in Suandok. The other piece placed on the back of a white elephant which was released in the jungle. The elephant climbed up Doi Suthep, at the time called Doi Aoy Chang (Sugar Elephant Mountain), trumpeted three times and died at the site. Interpreted as a sign King Nu Naone ordered the construction of a temple at the site.

Doi Chiang Dao
Chiang Dao's most striking feature is Doi Chiang Dao, Thailand's 3rd highest mountain at 2225m which plays host to an abundance of wildlife and nature. It is one of the lesser-visited, but nonetheless interesting Thai birding sites.

Chiang Dao Cave
The cave complex is supposed to extend more than twelve kilometres into the mountain but there are five main areas inside where visits can be safely made. Just outside the main entrance is a crystal clear pool containing a lot of very large fish that are extremely well fed due to the ever-present fish food vendor and children eager to oblige. The water comes directly from the mountain.
Pay the ten baht admittance fee and ascend the steps to the cave itself. The air feels decidedly cool after the heat of the day but rest assured, you will soon be sticky as the air inside the cave thins out noticeably.
You immediately descend to a large cavern where there is a Buddha image and a lot of guides with gas lamps offering to guide you through the cave complex and point out all the interesting features. They charge a fixed 100 baht for their services as the sign clearly states. The price is the same for all size groups so it makes good sense to join up with others if possible.

Muang On Cave

Located on the top of a limestone hill (approx. 900 meters high). A long 187 steps staircase rewards with a scenic view over the valley, and a steep climb down of 132 steps leads to a number of caverns filled with impressive stalagmites and stalactites. In one cavern is a large Buddha image. This cave is situated at San Kamphaeng near the Hot Springs.

Ban Huay Kaew village
To reach the village one has to climb a winding, steep road to the top of the mountain.
Before reaching Ban Huay Kaew village at the right hand side is a lake by fish farms, duck farms and fishing huts, which together with the mountain views offer amazing photographical opportunities. Descending, the smooth drive down to the village, at both sides of the road are commecial "gardens" where the locals sell mature trees and ornamental conifer trees, known as " Ton Son Mangkorn".

Teen Tok Royal Project
Teen Tok Royal Project is a project for native Thai, where expert advice is on tap to help farmers from the hill villages produce top quality coffee beans, tea, dragon fruit and an array of vegetables, including mushrooms and other commercially viable flowers and ferns; The project also buys the end product from the farmer. The experts are working on a grove of Vanilla bean vines and introducing the growing of passion fruit. With 350 families or approx. 1200 people involved it is considered to be a middle-sized project.

Mae Lai Village
About 2 kilometers from the Teen Tok Royal Project a turn of to the left leads to Mae Lai Village, where a trail seldom visited by outsiders hosts an adventurous hike. A narrow concrete road of 2.7 ilometers will take you to the fringe of this village. The villagers mainly depend as their main stable income on the Thai tea leaf "Miang"

Mae Kam Pong waterfall
A short trek to Mae Kam Pong 7 cascading waterfalls is recommended. Ascend and descend takes about 2 hours or even longer if one is intensively attracted to the flora and fauna

Mae Kam Pong village
Mae Kam Pong village is located at apprx. 48 kilometers from Chiang Mai and its zones Mae Kam Pong Nok (inner), Ma Kam Pong Khrang (central) and Mae Kam Pong Nai (outer) are collective highlights. They are a perfect destination to experience the unspoiled beauty of nature and Chiang Mai’s picturesque countryside. A stop will be made at a local market. The local villagers are very friendly; they will give their visitors a glimpse at their unique lifestyle while nobody will escape the unique and overwhelming scenery. Mae Kam Pong village is 1,300 meters above sea level with an average temperature of 10-18 C throughout the year. Recommended is walk through the inflorescence and evergreen community forest, sheltering surrounding watershed, multiple streams flowing over waterfalls, rocky landscape and fertile soil where the villagers grow tea and coffee. Observe how they preserve their forest and the way they live in harmony with nature. Walk around the village to witness the fermented tea leaves process, known as "Pa Miang" and take a look at their hand made products like the therapeutic pillows of Khun Wonwimol Bell. Mae Kam Pong is a good example for the King’s self sufficient economy theory. Another unique experience would be to prepare a picnic basket, having your lunch at a waterfall or to have a lunch in the village as we recommend the village specialist "Yam Bai Miang", an herb salad and omelet cooked on banana leaf tops. Admire garden flowers like the ground orchid commonly known as "Ern Din", as their blossoms are the regions pride. They can be seen in gardens and backyards of almost each home, dominating the original "Dok Kam Pong" flower. Mae Kam Pong in Chiang Mai Province is among the villages that have developed hydropower generation by a special Governments Project.
